Gallery

The images in the gallery are a record of the work undertaken in the artists’ studio from the beginning of the project. You can see how the work develops from the initial idea to artistic explorations through to the finished works that are made for exhibition.

During the course of this research the studio has become a place for experimentation and testing with new and unexplored materials. Like a scientific laboratory not all of the experiments are successful and some of the tested works remain unresolved.

Studio lab pageStudio lab… “During the course of the research project the artists studio changes from being blank and empty to a place that is full of ideas, models and sometimes mistakes. The works develop overtime and inform each other as ideas evolve and change.”
Invisible - visibleInvisible-Visible… “Using the printing technique of blind embossing this work explores the printing of the word and definition of the word mutation. The text is arranged in the ‘lanes’ of a western blot and the text appears and disappears using ink and pressure.”
Double helix structureDouble helix structure…“paper sculptures representing the 3 dimensional form of the double helix structure.”
Light shadowLight & Shadow…“studio experiments using light to create shadow. Photo 51 of the DNA pattern by Rosalind Franklin is an image of the ‘shadow’ of the molecule. These tests explored the ‘shadow’ of written text.”
Disappearing textDisappearing Text… “Japanese rice paper is used to absorb the water creating a change in the text, a mutation of the word mutation.”
Cyanotype“Blueprint…the cyanotype is the original ‘blueprint’. The word Blueprint is used metaphorically to describe the DNA fingerprint of an individual. Here the early recipe discovered by Herschel (1792-1871) is used to print the mutation text as a Western Blott.”
Test tube testsTest Tube Tests…“suspended test tubes are used to display 3m blotting paper. The text written in ink on the paper is disturbed and changes as the capillary action of the paper absorbs the liquid.”
Kiln testsCyanotype Kiln Test 1…”cyanotype blueprints fused into float glass to change/destroy the text.”
Gel testsGel Tests…“studio experiments emulating laboratory processes using gels and cyanotype printing.”
PortraitsPortraits… “photographic medical pictures from Duchenne da Boulogne c1850 combined with Western Blot Diagnostics.”
Presents as...Presents as… “Western Blot as Portrait These studio experiments have culminated in the idea of thinking about the Western Blot as a portrait and how the patient ‘presents as’…”
